Gekiranger ramblings – Gou

Watching ep 24 again, I get the impression that Gou’s characterization is a bit…confused. Particularly at ep 24, during the Gou-Rio confrontation, from Gou’s attitude I believe Gou was originally written to be a rough, guregure character (ep’s name is “Gure Gure,” in fact). But as we get on with the series more, Gou seems to become more and more of a big softie. I dunno if this was meant to be a “Gou only seems rough until you get to know him better” or if it was actual change in the way Gou was originally written or was meant to be portrayed or what. Just seemed inconsistent to me.

Also, in eps 24 and 25, where we had Gou’s guregure, in those same episodes we saw him worrying about his Shigeki, and a number of doubts and things going through his mind that maybe Gou was meant to be a character who was guregure on the surface but who is generally too serious and thinks too much.

Or maybe I just never paid enough attention to Gou to be able to pick apart his character like I can do for Rio or Mele. ._.

The exact relationship between Gou and Rio is something that perpetually gives me a headache albeit a happy one! :D, orz. There’s actually very little, canonically, dealing with their relationship, and that makes it fun, because I can invent, basically all of it. But the little bits in canon whirl my head around a bit. Maybe because I don’t have Gou’s character down, but there are so many ways of looking at their relationship: in Gou’s first appearance, he says, distinctly, “…Geki Jyuken’s traitor, Rio.” Also on his first appearance, during the flashback Gou adopts an extremely unaffected and careless attitude toward Rio’s anger. And yet in that same flashback, instead of taking on Rio directly, he uses Jyu Jyu Zenshin Hen. Now, despite the Kensei having used the Jyu Jyu Zenshin Hen prior to sealing the Kenma, I don’t think it’s a sealing technique in particular, just a transformation technique. Or am I getting it wrong and it is a sealing technique? In which case that makes sense, Gou morally wanting to seal Rio rather than kill him. (The thing about Jyu Jyu Zenshin Hen is that it means “Beast (Beast) Full-body Change.” Alluding to the transformation, in other words. And yet it’s been referred to as a sealing technique somewhere, I think. Guess I’m just confused on this point.)

And then there’s Miki’s picture, where the three of them are smiling happily, and Miki’s own words: “Gou and Rio used to be such great friends.” And then there’s the other flahback, where Gou throws Rio a water canteen and they make pleasant conversation (and Rio uses the most pleasant-sounding voice we ever hear from him, which backs up Miki’s words). But Gou makes a bitter face into the fire.

I think I get the impression that they got annoyed at each other (or at least, Gou gets annoyed at Rio) quite a lot. And yet at the same time, they…didn’t? ._. It’s just that there is one thing two of them have in common that I think is pretty important: both are parentless. Whether or not this has any bearing on their friendship I’m not sure. But doesn’t it seem as if, with something like that in common, they’d even unconsciously stick to each other, even if they didn’t particularly like each other? And Miki, who doesn’t have that in common with either. Who makes the comment that they were good friends.

And then Gou’s (somewhat belated) anger at Rio, that drove him to learn the Tenchi Tenpen Da, prompting that water-canteen flashback, Gou’s “As your friend I will now correct you” (or something like that). Personally, I think the fact that this was somewhat belated was an indication that Gou was meant to be more guregure than he was, but never mind.

I just don’t know whether to portray their relationship as love-hate or what. =_=;;

I just slept from ~9PM to ~12noon. I shouldn’t be sleepy, dammit. OTL

Although technically, I slept from ~9PM to ~12midnight and then couldn’t get back to sleep for the longest time. ;_; And lately, I’ve been tossing and turning like crazy. It’s crazy, man! I literally can’t sleep until after midnight! Why does this happen to me? ~sob~ Although the ‘can’t sleep till midnight’ thing has been happening since forever, orz.

Despite all of WordPress’ boasting, a newer verson of wp (more new than what this personal blog is running on, not as new as the newest release) is actually more difficult to use than this personal blog. What the fuck.
